In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to made in honor of Kramer to the Sarcoma Foundation of American.Local newspapers are a vast source of information for family historians. “And he always thought I was smarter, capable, and more talented than I believed.” “He was always there for me,” Leigh Kramer said. Leigh Kramer said she was a swimmer when she was young, and even though she wasn’t very good, her father was always there in the bleachers watching her swim meets. She said he was willing to do things that made him uncomfortable, like tackling technology, because he didn’t want to stop telling the story.īut Kramer was more than just a great editor and reporter. She said he knew everything that was happening in town and if he saw something out of the ordinary he would immediately start thinking that it might be a story. “It’s just his passion,” Leigh Kramer said. Tamara Leigh Kramer, his daughter, said her father didn’t know how to stop reporting. In his final week, he emailed Backus to let her know what a good job she was doing. His family joked that he would do anything for a story, including going to the hospital during a pandemic to see what was happening. His final story for CTNewsJunkie was posted April 22. He was still reporting from his hospital bed. He joked that CTNewsJunkie had “pulled an old reporter off the scrap heap,” but Kramer was never rusty. In a goodbye column that never ran because there was hope that his cancer prognosis would improve, Kramer reflected on some of those stories. He was also proud of the topics he got to cover. He made such a mark on the careers of all the reporters and editors he worked with throughout his career. “Whatever windmill I was chasing, he would 100 percent say go for it,” Backus said.Īt the same time, he was this incredible person who was really modest about it. “He was a tremendous editor and truly a reporter’s editor.”īackus said she did some of her best work under Kramer because he supported her and let her go out and do the reporting. “What a loss for journalism,” Backus said. He called everyone to the newsroom and they got to work putting out the paper the next day in addition to a special edition. Santangelo said the same was true on 9/11. She said he was always calm when there was breaking news about a hospital shooting or the Sandy Hook school shooting. Lisa Backus, who worked for Kramer in New Britain, said he understood a good story and was supportive of his reporters. “No one can stand in his shadow or fill his shoes.” “The day Jack left the Register was the day that paper changed forever,” she said. She said the most calls he ever got from readers was when the national syndicate ran the same Batman comic twice. Kramer, who started out delivering the New Haven Register, would even field calls from disgruntled readers, Rollins Bachinski said. “When you thought about the Register you thought about Jack Kramer.” “The police chief knew him, the mayor knew him, and the fire chief knew him,” said Santangelo, who is now assistant managing editor at the New Haven Register.

Some degree, based on the normal distribution. Everything we do or almostĮverything we do in inferential statistics which isĮssentially, making inferences based on data points, is to Sorry for the length of this, but it was an interesting question that is hard to describe in a shorter post.Īrguably, the most important concept in statistics. Again, this is so small that we'd just round it off to zero, and say that it is impossible to have more than 60 inches of rain in this area. There's not really an upper bound on rainfall, so 60 inches isn't a physically impossible value like -1, but the probability is 0.000000000001. Similarly, we could ask about the probability of more than 60 inches of rain. However, it is so small as to be practically zero, so this isn't going to affect much of anything, and it is much easier than the alternative of using a different distribution to model the rainfall. It's clearly an impossible event, but the probability is not equal to zero. Let's try it out, say we want to calculate the probability of less than -1 inches of rain. Why? Because the probabilities down near zero will be so small that they'll round off to zero, so it makes no difference really. For example, let's say we're measuring the rainfall in a certain city, and that the mean is 25 inches and the standard deviation is 5 inches.Ĭlearly the amount of rainfall cannot be negative, but we can still put a normal distribution on this. However, in spite of whether or not something is theoretically possible, on a practical level it is impossible. At some point, we just get sick of the whole process and round it off to 0.Īre those values actually impossible to obtain? Possibly, but not necessarily. What about 0.0000001 ? Well, that's even more unlikely. If something has probability 0.0001, okay, that's pretty unlikely. What you are thinking about as 0% probability, is actually just rounded off. So all of those values are possible values, they just have extremely small probability. You are right that on a theoretical level, it goes out to infinity in either direction. We're simply only interested in the non-zero probability, so we don't write all the items for which the probability is zero. How can we describe the probability distribution? Well, we'd start with the obvious: Say I place 3 red marbles, 3 yellow marbles. What probability does is assign a value (the probability) to a particular outcome. The rest of this answer is a somewhat lengthy explanation, but I couldn't think of a way to shorten it without sacrificing a point. In fact, that is how we define impossible. The shortest answer would be: having a probability of zero is equivalent with being impossible. This is a good question about probability. For more information on the nature of the normal distribution, take a look at At last, the exponential gives the function its asymptotic behavior. The variable squared gives this function is parabolic look, while the negative sign makes its concavity look downward. So the core of the normal distribution is exp(-x²/2). f(x/2) is tighter, while f(x/0.5) is wider than the original f(x). Finally, if you try out exp(-((x-mu)/sigma)²/2) you'll then find out that you have the same shape shifted by the mean and elongated or shrunk by the standard deviation. That is a basic characteristic of the normal distribution. If you then graph exp(-(x-mu)²/2), you'll see the same function shifted by its mean - the mean must correspond to the function's maximum. If you try to graph that, you'll see it looks already like the bell shape of the normal function. Actually, the normal distribution is based on the function exp(-x²/2). So it must be normalized (integral of negative to positive infinity must be equal to 1 in order to define a probability density distribution). The integral of the rest of the function is square root of 2xpi. For the test we used the Narvik map in the 64-player Conquest mode for about 60 second on each run.įor the majority of the benchmarks we we're using DirectX 11 as it provides more consistent frame time performance. If you've got 30 players close out in front, the frame rates will be much lower than if the action is taking place well off in the distance, so making sure the same sort of stuff was going on around the player character for each pass was a serious challenge and very time consuming. We neglected extreme outliers and tested many more times than usual to try and report the most accurate performance possible, so results presented on this article are based on an average of 6 runs, rather than 3. With high-end hardware a deviation of more than a few frames is rare, though testing with multiplayer we were often seeing up to a ~10 fps difference for the average frame rate. Fluctuation between runs can be quite large compared to our Battlefield V single player GPU benchmark, which often delivers the same average frame rates and 1% low results over and over again. However, there's a big difference in CPU demand between the two modes, and 64-player multiplayer really puts the hurt on lower-end processors.įor testing CPU performance we are using Battlefield V's 64-player Conquest mode, which creates a number of challenges for accurate testing, but nonetheless we threw ourselves at the task. For those tests we used the single player campaign to measure performance as it's easy to record accurate data and visually the single and multiplayer portions of the game are much the same. We also looked at real-time ray tracing performance. Battlefield V is set to release for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on October 19.Earlier this month we tested graphics performance in Battlefield V covering a massive range of graphics cards at 1080p, 1440p and 4K. If you want to see how exactly Ray Tracing will alter the visual quality of the game, you can check out the video below (uploaded by Youtube channel HotHardware), which shows demos of the game using RTX Ray Tracing technology. Regarding some doubts whether the game actually runs at 60 FPS, DICE media editor Jonas Gammelholm, as well as Holmquist, stated, “We also saw some questions on the Internet before, reading some comments saying that ‘we are confused, the demo is running in slow-motion, so how is the game running in real-time?’ And we are of course… it’s all fine. Things in the environment will feel more lifelike and real and all-out war will never look the same.” With this new Nvidia RTX platform, more detail than ever before can now be seen on the battlefield, from recognizing the flash of a muzzle being reflected off a car to spotting the detailed reflection of a devastated facade in a splash of water on the ground. Holmquist described how using the RTX Ray Tracing Technology helped them achieve a great amount of visual detail in their game, stating, “It’s always been important to us as a studio to stay one step ahead as we look to increase the graphical fidelity in games. What’s even more impressive is that the game was also making use of Nvidia’s Ray Tracing technology, powered by the GeForce RTX.įor those of you who don’t know, Ray Tracing is basically a technique that is, in the simples of terms, used to achieve significantly more realistic lighting effects (though obviously there’s a lot more to it than that). During a presentation on the game at the event (via DSO Gaming), DICE’s technical director Christian Holmquist also revealed that the demo of the game at the event was running at a 1080p revolution, and more impressively, at a frame rate of 60 FPS. Battlefield V was presented at Gamescom a few days ago, and even beyond that, we got to learn a lot more about the game, since it was playable at the event. NRC is dependent on thickness and density. But before you go rushing out to buy some rockwool, it’s worth understanding this in more detail. The rest either passes through or reflects back to the source.Īn NRC of 1.0 means perfect sound absorption. It translates to a percentage of sound absorbed meaning a material with an NRC of 0.6 absorbs 60% of a sound wave’s energy. This is a scale from 0.0 to 1.0 that measures a material’s ability to absorb sound waves. We’ll start with NRC, which stands for noise reduction coefficient. It’s worth breaking some of these down to understand why they’re relevant to soundproofing. Here’s a handy comparison chart so you can see these differences clearly. But there are some important differences worth considering. Of course, both products are fairly similar in terms of construction and use. Their open structure and density are fairly effective at absorbing sound waves, which is useful in wall cavities. In short, both glass wool and rock wool help with soundproofing on the opposite basis of how they help with thermal insulation. In this situation, density is less of a consideration because a denser material has more mass to vibrate. Note, however, this is for soundproofing rather than acoustic management. This is because its fluffy insulation is low density, meaning it’s harder for sound waves to vibrate through it. Importantly, though, fiberglass is better from a soundproofing perspective. Acoustic foam is probably the best example of a specific soundproofing product. Materials with an open structure are useful for absorbing sound waves. Sound absorption happens when sound waves enter a material and expend some (or all) of their energy trying to make the particles vibrate. Glass wool and rock wool both rely, to different extents, on absorption. Of course, we’re not interested in their thermal conduction properties, but rather their acoustic insulation properties.Īs you may already know, soundproofing works on several core principles, including: They work by trapping small pockets of air between the fibers, and this is what provides the thermal insulation itself.Ĭompared to solids, gasses have very poor thermal conduction, making them great insulators. Importantly, both of these products are primarily thermal insulators. Much like glass wool, the rock is spun into strands (like cotton candy) and then bound into sheets. But instead of glass, it’s made from spun stone or silica. Rockwool, also known as mineral wool, is essentially the same product. Thin layers are pressed together into a bigger sheet for greater strength and stability. Simply put, glass wool insulation is made from glass that’s been spun into fibers and then formed into sheets using a binding agent. You’ve probably just realized that you’ve heard of this product, as it appears in most homes and DIY stores. Glass wool is also known as fiberglass insulation. To understand their uses in soundproofing projects, it’s first helpful to understand exactly what these products are. Hopefully, by the end, you’ll understand why one is much better than the other. In this article, I’ll go through the important differences between glasswool and rockwool, and how this impacts their use for soundproofing. In the meantime, illwieckz from the Unvanquished team has taken over this task and offers current builds not only for Windows operating systems on a new NetRadiant website. There you can still download old versions, as well as have a look at configuration notes and some valuable tutorials. For fans of other Radiant-versions there are separate tutorials:Įarlier versions of NetRadent were compiled regularly by Ingar, who made the builds available through his project website. Meanwhile NetRadiant offers in my opinion more features and comfort than GtkRadiant. The development of the NetRadiant is mainly driven by Team Xonotic and also receives support from the team behind Unvanquished. Aside from game packs for a number of other id-Tech3 based games, it also comes with a current version of the Q3Map2 compiler, which has also been further developed in terms of stability and bug fixing. NetRadiant is based on the source code of GtkRadiant 1.5, and consistently continues its development. With older versions you might encounter errors when using this tutorial.
